UGUIDE Unguided South Dakota Pheasant Hunting Report Week 1

October 24, 2013 by

UGUIDE Pheasant Camp has begun to collect harvest data weekly from each of its camps and will post these results here on a weekly basis.  We will do this in an effort to distinguish ourselves from speculative and noncomprehensive reports to give the pheasant hunter a better idea of what is going on around the state and at UGUIDE pheasant camps.

Keep in mind that non-release pheasant hunting has a host of variables that can affect harvest success.  Assume all data is for self-guided, unguided pheasant hunts and where guided, it will be noted in the results.  Unguided pheasant hunting success can be affected dramatically by just a few of these variables:  Crop harvest progress, dog skills, dog quantity, hunter skills, hunter quantity, shooting skills, daily weather, etc.

Comments:  Much of the state had experienced dramatic rainfall just weeks prior to opener and crop harvest has slowed to a standstill thus impacting hunting results and and limiting visual sightings of pheasants.  Look at the USDA crop harvest numbers above for 2012 versus 2013.  It is dramatic and will have a huge impact.  I remember getting stoked for Iowa's opener and not a lick of corn was out and the hunting was terrible.
