UGUIDE Unguided South Dakota Pheasant Hunting Report Week 2

October 28, 2013 by

UGUIDE Pheasant Camps has begun to collect harvest data from each of its camps fro each week and will post these results here on a weekly basis.  We will do this in an effort to distinguish itself from speculative and non comprehensive reports to give the pheasant hunting a better idea of what is going on around the state and at UGUIDE pheasant camps.

Keep in mind that non-release pheasant hunting has a host of variables that can affect harvest success.  Assume all data is for self-guided unguided pheasant hunts and where guided will be noted in the results.  Unguided pheasant hunitng success can be affected dramitically by just a few of these variables:  Crop harvest progress, dog skills, dog quantity, hunter skills, hunter quantity, shooting skills, daily weather, etc.

Comments:  All I am hearing is "Crops are in and birds are down".   This seems counter intuitive to me.   Truly what is the situation is that when the crops are in the "visible" sightings of birds will be down.  The lower bird numbers are conisitent with areas that have the highest amount of crops still in.  This is a year VERY similar to 2009 if any of you remember that year.  I had corn in on my farm well into December and the late season hunters had the best luck.
